Your Own Home Business Online
63Before the start of the Internet, only the well-to-do owned their own home business. Not so today, though, as more and more people are utilizing the global impact on the Internet to start an online home business.
Unlike the usual high startup cost of operating a business off line, you can start an online home business for free or low cost. There are so many digital products you can choose to sell online, for example, that allow you to avoid overheads or carrying of stock. All your customers need do to get products from you is to hit the same download link over and over again.
Many people start off in a small way online. They choose a business and work it part-time until some success is achieved before deciding to quit their full-time day job permanently. It’s a good idea before moving completely online, though, to be entirely sure that your enterprise will continue to at least equal your day job income.
Newbies to the Internet should be realistic and not expect immediate success. Concentrate on learning about Internet marketing, looking for genuine opportunities with little start-up cost, acquiring some marketing tools – preferably free ones which are available if you search the Web. Be aware as a newbie that new online marketing techniques need to be learnt before you can hope to make any money.
Affiliate marketing is a good area in which to kick-start your introduction to the online arena. Here you don’t have the worry about product creation, you just need work on behalf of someone else’s product and receive a percentage of the profits. Do diligent research on the product owner and the product quality before getting involved, though. Evaluate testimonials and ensure customer and affiliates satisfaction with the program.
Avoid using free web pages in advertising a product or your business. Domains are relatively cheap to buy and host these days and, besides, having your own domain adds professionalism to your online enterprise. You will have a lot more freedom to place what you want on your web pages and it will be easier to establish a ranking on the search engines.
There is a huge learning curve as regards website SEO (search engine optimization) and in placing content on your web pages. There is also the skill involved in getting traffic to your site and deciding on whether to use free or paid methods to achieve this.
There is much to learn, particularly as you have a continuous growing global market to cater for. Don’t be in a hurry in trying to sell something, though. Build relationships with those you first meet online. Once you have gained their trust, then you can slowly introduce them to some of your goods. Many successful online entrepreneurs concentrate on building relationships with huge contact lists before trying to sell them anything.

Glad to see you on Hubpages, Judith. Thanks for the hub. I run an online business and have enjoyed doing so. I like meeting people and helping them start their businesses. It seems then that we have somethings in common. Looking forward to keeping up with your hubs!
